the Lofoten Islands
with sheer mountains and clear water
Blessed with the best weather Norway has had in years, the Lofoten Islands have been the most lovely cruising ground. Is Norway always this sunny?
are simply out of this world
Deep in the Norwegian fjords, we found this almost perfect anchorage. Completely deserted, and like a Norwegian version of the Wild West, we caught mackerel, swam, kayaked and drank a beer or two!
Weaving through the archipelago
Under full sail
can be pretty exhillerating at times!
We couldn’t resist getting a few shots of ‘The Bird’ as we wound our way through the labyrinth of channels en route to Mariehamm. It’s certainly been some of the best sailing we’ve ever done, if a little nerve-wracking at times! And there’s plenty more to come as we head for the Stockholm archipelago next.
When the sailing's done
it's time to kayak!
We take Hummingbird into some pretty tight spaces, but past a certain point it’s down to Pigeon our trusty tender and the kayak. It’s such a lovely way to explore a coastline or anchorage.
ever wondered what it looks like
at the top of the mast
when there's genuinely no wind
You get an amazing sea!
and a beautiful sunset
Leaving Sassnitz, on the German island of Rugen, there was not a breath of wind, but equally the sea was almost oily in its texture. It’s rarely like this. An awesome site!
cooking up a storm in
with an impromptu dock dinner
Sometimes, you just have that completely unexpected evening, in a little harbour we had no intention of visiting. An incredible sunset, a brilliant dinner, a dip in the Baltic and a ferociously hot sauna to top it off. Estonian heaven and the true essence of our expeditions.
Fully decked out in
Sometimes you just have to put up every flag you have and show your colours! basking in the sun in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Visby, Gotland off the east coast of Sweden

time to sail
and learn the ropes
What a season we’ve had in 2014. All the way from London to St Petersburg, back through the Finnish and Swedish archipelagoes, via Helsinki and Stockholm. We sailed to the Faeroes and on up to the Arctic Circle, using only the sextant and we’ve wound our way down the Norwegian fjords. Most of the crew have been first timers or of only limited experience. Qualifications have been gained, skills learned and friendships for life made!
